We’re just back from an ill-advised stay at Trenython Manor and Country Club at the invitation of Club La Costa. The house is certainly prestigious – standing in 25 acres of ground and woodland overlooking St. Austell Bay. But we had to endure the timeshare hard sell for a whole afternoon and I fell sick (fortunately, actually, as I felt unable to make any kind of decision).
While we were there we visited the National Trust gardens at Trelissik, just by the King Harry Ferry at Carrick Roads.
The garden and estate is renowned for its glorious position at the head of Carrick Roads, with panoramic views down the estuary towards Falmouth and the sea. It has been planted with an abundance of tender shrubs characteristic of Cornwall – camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias – together with many rare varieties of hydrangea and a newly established Cornish apple orchard.
There are also walks through 500 acres of riverside woods and parkland sweeping down to the water’s edge. Extensive trails meander through the woodland, traverse the parkland and follow the riverside. On leaving the gardens and crossing the sweeping green parkland towards the Fal Estuary, there are some staggering views.
